Vision Zero is a groundbreaking approach to urban road safety that aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries. Originating in Sweden in the 1990s, this innovative strategy has gained global traction, offering hope for safer streets worldwide. At its core, Vision Zero recognizes that traffic deaths are preventable and sets the ambitious goal of reducing them to zero. This paradigm shift moves away from accepting casualties as inevitable and instead treats each incident as an opportunity to improve the transport system.

In practice, Vision Zero India encompasses a multifaceted approach to road safety. Raahgiri Foundation combines safe road design, effective speed management, and targeted enforcement strategies to create a comprehensive safety net. By focusing on infrastructure improvements, such as protected cycle lanes and pedestrian crossings, alongside behavioural interventions like education campaigns and stricter penalties for dangerous driving, Vision Zero strives to create a culture of safety. This holistic strategy not only aims to reduce accidents but also promotes more equitable and sustainable urban mobility, ensuring that all road users—pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike—can travel safely and efficiently.
